Local Dentist & NHL Stars Raise Funds for Pediatric Concussion Research
Dr. Bryan Hoertdoerfer, Hoertdoerfer Dentistry was among Top 10 fundraisers ($27,000) at The 7th Annual Corey Griffin NHL Alumni Pro-Am.
The Corey C. Griffin NHL Alumni Pro-Am is a partnership between the NHL Alumni, the Boston Bruins Foundation and the Corey C. Griffin Foundation whose main goal is to make a difference in the lives of pediatric head trauma patients by supporting Boston Children’s Hospital Pediatric Concussion research.
The wildly popular hockey tournament has raised over $3M since its inception in 2013. 22 NHL Alumni and 13 local teams came together at the New England Sports Center in Marlborough, Massachusetts on March 29-March 30, 2019 and raised $575K. Dr. Hoertdoerfer’s team raised $27K this year with a total in excess of $250K since 2013. The focus is on developing therapy technologies either to prevent head injury, find better methods of treatment, and establish ways to prevent trauma after multiple concussions.
Boston Children’s Hospital Pediatric Head Trauma Unit is considered one of the world’s leading pediatric neuroscience centers for the research of trauma on the developing brain. Funds raised enable the BCH Pediatric Head Trauma Unit to: Launch a formal local and regional baseline testing program, expand research efforts by supporting pilot grants in all areas of brain injury research, and expand opportunities for new multidisciplinary research projects to create transformative models of care.
“It is an honor to stand with NHL Alumni, the Boston Bruins Foundation, the Corey C. Griffin Foundation and my team donors. Together we raised $575K at this year’s Corey C. Griffin NHL Alumni Pro Am to make a difference in the lives of pediatric head trauma patients. Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) is the leading cause of injury-related death and disability in children. We need to protect our children from concussions; they are our future leaders and the most valuable asset we have.” Dr. Bryan Hoertdoerfer, Team Captain and top 10 Fundraiser for the 7th Corey C. Griffin NHL Alumni Pro Am Hockey Tournament.
Dr. William Mehan, Director of the Micheli Center for Sports Injury Prevention at Children’s Hospital said, “The money raised last year led to a $14.7M grant to fund a study to conduct comprehensive neurologic health assessment and track the progress of former players. We focused on developing therapy technologies either to prevent injury, find better ways to treat it, or prevent traumas after multiple concussions. We are applying for another 20M to use on a study of a collar on animals that decreased the risk of animals developing tau protein that defines Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE).” Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy is a condition of brain damage which persists over a period of years or decades and which is the result of traumatic impacts to the cranium creating tissue and deposits of tau protein in the brain. 3.8 million Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) occur in United States each year and is the leading cause of injury-related death and disability in children. Concussions are the most common childhood injury, especially among student-athletes.
A history of TBI (including concussions) is associated with the increased risk of Alzheimer’s disease and Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) later in life.
It is no wonder that parents, researchers and the NHL Alumni take pediatric concussion research seriously. Massachusetts law now mandates student-athletes take a baseline concussion test before they start playing a sport. They must take another test after a concussion has been diagnosed and they cannot play again until the baseline concussion result has been re-achieved. More research on how advancing concussion protocol for student-athletes is needed.
